Getting started with AI
A simple guide for complete beginners. You only need a phone or computer and an internet connection.
1. What is an AI assistant?
An AI assistant is a website or app you can chat with by typing, like sending a message. You ask a question or give it a job — “write this email”, “explain this”, “make a checklist” — and it writes an answer in seconds.
It is very useful, but it can make mistakes. Treat it like a fast helper whose work you always check.
2. Open a free AI assistant
Pick any one. All have a free version. Go to the website, or install the app on your phone.
- ChatGPT — chatgpt.com
- Gemini (Google) — gemini.google.com
- Claude — claude.ai
- Microsoft Copilot — copilot.microsoft.com
Some may ask you to sign in with an email or Google account. Free plans have limits; that’s normal. We are not paid by these companies.
3. Type your first question
- Click the box at the bottom that says something like “Ask anything” or “Message”.
- Copy the example below and paste it in (press and hold on a phone, then “Paste”).
- Change [your job] to your job, then press Enter or the arrow button.
- Read the answer. You can reply, just like a chat: “Make it shorter”, “Explain step 2”.

These come from real tasks people do in these jobs. Find your job’s full list by picking your job.
Nurse

5. Stay safe: 6 simple rules
- Never type private details: real names, patient or customer details, ID numbers, passwords, bank details.
- Follow your workplace rules about AI. If unsure, ask your manager.
- Always check facts, numbers, names and dates. AI can sound sure and still be wrong.
- Don’t use AI alone for medical, legal or money decisions — ask a qualified person.
- You are responsible for anything you send or use.
- Check privacy settings — some assistants let you turn off saving your chats.
